School Programs

The Monoosnoc Brook Greenway Project is able to provide educational programs to the schools of Leominster. Programs for the 2006 - 07 school year are free of charge due to the generous funding received by the NRWA from Bovenzi Inc, an anonymous donor, and support from the community.

To register for any of Monoosnoc Brook's programs held either at your school, or at the brook, contact us. We will be happy to have a naturalist work with you and your class on any programs listed on our website, or to help you design one to fit the needs of your curriculm.

Meet a Watershed!
(Enviroscape watershed model)
A naturalist will bring our interactive watershed model to your classroom to teach students about runoff pollution, and other human impacts (both positive and negative) on our local watershed. Students take turns adding 'chemicals', 'nutrients', and 'pollutants' to developed areas, and spraying 'rain' on the model to observe the effects of runoff (non-point source pollution) on the rivers and streams. The class will brainstorm a variety of solutions to help protect our natural water sources.
Grades 2 - 10

Schoolyard Ecology
Discover the intricate ecosystems in your own backyard! Students explore their schoolyard or local environment as an outdoor classroom using a variety of hands-on activities. Possible themes: Wildlife Investigations, Soil Testing, Biodiversity Inventory, or Schoolyard Habitats.
Grades 1 - 12

Biodiversity Days
Biodiversity is all the species of life in any given area. Biodiversity Days is a week of programs (usually the first week of June, but dates can be before or after) offered in every state in Massachusetts, focused on learning about and recording the biodiversity in local habitats (including schoolyards, nature centers and recreational spaces). Monoosnoc Brook participates in Biodiversity Days every year, and we can bring a naturalist to your schoolyard - or meet a small group at the Brook - to lead a Biodiversity walk. All data collected during the walk can get added to the State's online database (our naturalist can guide you and your class through this process, or enter the data for you), giving students an opportunity to contribute to ongoing scientific research.
Grades 1 - 12

Meet the Monoosnoc Video and Handbook

Easton An approved part of the Leominster curriculum, the instructional manual provides activities and information about the Monoosnoc Brook, watersheds, greenways and other water issues. Teachers can copy activity sheets to give to students. A video accompanies the program. This program is being used as a model across the Commonwealth for teaching water issues. It has also been used in Russia to teach grassroots organizations about improving their water resources.
