History and
Background
Our past reveals that the flow
of history for the City of Leominster has been vitally connected
with the flow of the Monoosnoc Brook. As early as 1738, several mills
harnessed the power of the brook’s waters enabling the first settlers to establish
themselves and prosper. Eventually instead of power taken from the brook,
garbage was thrown in, neglect replaced appreciation, and soon the brook
became more of an eyesore than a source of pride.
A planning process
began in response to concerns of local businesses, residents and City
officials. In 1986, the Monoosnoc Brook Greenway Project (MBGP) was formed
as part of the Nashua River Watershed Association (NRWA).
Through cleanups, site
work, education and other events, the MBGP has been successful at enhancing
the beauty of the brook. Walking trails and small park areas have been
established. We depend on our volunteers and supporters to continue our
work and ask everyone to become a Monoosnoc Brook Helper and "promise
to protect the birds, bugs, plants and animals that live along the Brook
and to help pick up litter and make the Earth safe for everyone and
everything."
Factoid: The
Monoosnoc Brook travels into the North Nashua River then into the Nashua
River then into the Merrimack River and then into the Atlantic Ocean!
