The garter snake is often incorrectly called a "garden snake." The hairy woodpecker and the downy woodpecker look very similar. The hairy woodpecker is larger and has a much larger beak.

This heron is a young, immature heron. The chest is speckled and the black stripe over the eye isn't as distinctive as in an adult. Also called a groundhog or marmot, these critters are 14 to 20 inches long (not including the tail) and weigh 5 to 10 pounds.

Crayfish are also referred to as crawfish and crawdads. They are a crustacean. Crayfish indicate that water quality is good or fair. We see many crayfish at our Cleanups.

The snapping turtle snaps to protect itself because it is the only turtle that can't hide in its shell. The flicker is a large member of the woodpecker family. They are often seen on the ground looking for insects.
